Franck Zal: Unlocking the therapeutic potential of marine worms
French marine biologist Franck Zal found a solution in the lugworm's extracellular haemoglobin that carries oxygen unlike anything in human biology, no blood type barriers, no immune rejection. He turned that into the first universal oxygen-carrying solution for organ preservation.
Over 90 000 people across Europe were awaiting organ transplants at the end of 2024. His invention buys surgeons more time. It's now being adapted for wound care and regenerative medicine, too.
Franck is a finalist in the European #InventorAward 2026.
