"What’s going on in the world?" Why global civilization will survive the decline of the West
In this new session of the "What’s going on in the world?" series of conferences, CIDOB will host a conversation with Amitav Acharya, author of the book "The Once and Future World Order: Why Global Civilization Will Survive the Decline of the West", alongside Pol Morillas and Inés Arco, moderated by Lluís Pellicer.
Since the dawn of the twenty-first century, the West has been in crisis. Social unrest, political polarization, and the rise of other great powers - especially China - threaten to unravel today's Western-led world order. Many fear this would lead to global chaos.
In his latest book, The Once and Future World Order: Why Global Civilization Will Survive the Decline of the West, Amitav Acharya reveals that world order existed long before the rise of the West. Moving from ancient Sumer, India, Greece, and Mesoamerica, through medieval caliphates and Eurasian empires into the present, Acharya shows that humanitarian values, economic interdependence, and rules of inter-state conduct emerged across the globe over millennia. History suggests order will endure even as the West retreats. Instead of fearing the future, the West should learn from history and cooperate with the Rest to forge a more equitable order.
In this new session of the "What’s going on in the world?" series of conferences, we will explore this with Amitav Acharya, Distinguished Professor at the School of International Service of the American University-Washington, Pol Morillas, director of CIDOB, and Inés Arco, Research Fellow at CIDOB, moderated by Lluís Pellicer, journalist at El País. The event will feature an opening speech by Josep Borrell, President of CIDOB.
The session will be streamed live on CIDOB’s YouTube channel. The conversation will be conducted in English with simultaneous translation in Spanish.
Amitav Acharya will be one of the speakers addressing the future of European security and defence at CIDOB’s international conference War and Peace in the 21st Century, which will take place next Saturday, 11 April. This edition of the "What’s going on in the world" series of conferences, open to the public, is part of the initiatives promoted within the framework of the War and Peace Week, organised by CIDOB around the conference, combining keynote lectures, roundtables and open dialogues.
