Virtual Film Screening: VS. GOLIATH: Cancer Alley

What happens when ordinary people take on billion-dollar industries? VS. GOLIATH tells stories of courage and resistance from the frontlines of the climate crisis. Each month, we'll screen one episode and hear directly from the people living these stories. In the July 7th screening, VS. Golitha: Cancer Alley, we come to understand what motivates a special education teacher and grandmother to fight back against the continent’s biggest plastics plant. Sharon Lavigne, 70, has lived in St. James, Louisiana, all her life, and she’s watched it turn from the lush and productive farmland of her youth into one of the most polluted places in the country, now known as “Cancer Alley.” When another huge petrochemical plant is announced for St. James, God tells Sharon to fight back. Follow Sharon and her daughter, Sharmyra, as they wrestle with how to build a better future for St. James. After the screening of the film, Sharon Lavigne, Shamyra Lavigne-Davey, and Darryl Malek-Wiley (of the Sierra Club Louisiana) will be moderated by Bill McKibben for a post-screening discussion and take audience questions dropped in the chat.
