Brewing the Future: Digital Payments in Kenya's Coffee Sector
Given the Kenyan government’s push for digitizing coffee payments, cooperatives and SACCOs have insisted on greater stakeholder consultation. Since 2023, 60 Decibels (60dB), in collaboration with the Gates Foundation and the Better Than Cash Alliance, has studied farmers’ experiences with non-cash payments. Findings from a 2025 study involving 271 coffee farmers from Kenya reveal their payment preferences and demand for transparent and timely transactions. VunaPay, an agri-fintech company, will discuss challenges and opportunities for digital adoption in Kenya’s coffee sector. The session will highlight broader lessons on responsible digitization, the importance of demonstrating a clear value proposition over cash, and adapting payment systems to meet farmer needs, leading to evidence-driven policies for digital transformation in agriculture.
