The Power of Data for Women’s Empowerment

The Power of Data for Women’s Empowerment

Data is more than numbers — it is a lens into women’s realities, aspirations, and potential. Yet for millions of women across the Global South, especially those working in the informal economy, their data remains fragmented, invisible, or underleveraged. Under the Accelerating Financial Inclusion and Women’s Resilience initiative supported by The Coca-Cola Foundation, a number of Accion partners, including SAJIDA Foundation (Bangladesh), SEWA (India), Fidelity Bank (Ghana), and partners in Mexico and Peru, respectively have been demonstrating how data, when applied thoughtfully, can unlock empowerment pathways for women. In Bangladesh, SAJIDA is building a graduation scoring model to ensure women transition responsibly from group to enterprise loans. In India, SEWA is digitizing its member base to consolidate scattered data, making informal women visible to financial institutions. In Ghana, Fidelity is using workplace data to surface gendered barriers and create inclusive leadership pipelines. In Mexico, one of our partners segmented women customers through behavioral data, tailoring financial products to their needs. Together, these cases show how data, in many forms, can reduce bias, increase visibility, and design financial systems that reflect women’s lived realities. The session will explore what these experiences mean for the broader industry: How can we use data responsibly to empower women? What risks and opportunities does this approach carry? And what lessons are transferable across markets?
