Meet our PhDs | Episode 3 | Franco Jauregui Fung | Bus rapid transit futures in Jakarta
Meet our PhDs at IDOS - Episode 3
Franco Jauregui Fung on bus rapid transit futures in Jakarta.
Over the last 30 years, more than 190 cities have implemented bus rapid transit. For many of these cities, this represents the first step towards institutional public transport, and a way to reduce the negative characteristics of informal transport. At the same time, many of cities in low and middle income countries have started implementing urban rail because of its passenger capacity, operability, speed, but also because many users to find it more attractive. This brings us to the question, what will happen to the existing bus rapid transit networks in those cities?
Franco Jauregui Fung examines in his research the multimodal integration between bus rapid transit and urban rail and its impact on the urban environment. I use the city of Jakarta as a fascinating case study as it's doing remarkable efforts to improve its urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion and pollution through the implementation of urban rail and also transit-oriented development. I believe that multimodal integration is a key step to improve user experience in favor of urban mobility.
