IRENA Insights - Analysis of the Potential for Green Hydrogen and Related Commodities Trade

Green hydrogen and its derivatives have the potential to play a pivotal role in decarbonising hard-to-abate industrial sectors such as steel and chemicals, while also enhancing energy security and supporting economic development in both producing and consuming regions. IRENA's latest report explores the techno-economic potential for trading green hydrogen and associated commodities—including ammonia, e-methanol, and direct reduced iron—by 2050, using a cost-optimisation approach. This webinar presented key findings from the report, examining how international trade can facilitate access to affordable low-carbon fuels and feedstock from resource-rich regions, diversify energy supply routes, and strengthen industrial competitiveness. Bringing together technical analysis and policy perspectives, this session highlighted the opportunities and enabling conditions required to realise the potential of green hydrogen trade in the global energy transition.
