How Heifer International Broke the Cycle of Rural Hunger #Development #Success
In this inspiring story of community-led change, participants of the KAYRA, a project by Heifer International, are improving the health and nutrition of children in Senegal. Local women are teaching families about nutrition, safe food preparation, handwashing, and how to recognize early signs of malnutrition before it becomes severe.
Through regular screenings, child nutrition monitoring has expanded from 68% to over 83%, helping families respond quickly and seek care when needed. Communities have also come together to build shared granaries stocked with millet, rice, and sorghum, providing nutritious porridge for children and strengthening food security across villages.
The movement goes beyond nutrition — women are participating in savings-and-loan groups, growing home gardens, improving household meals, and organizing village clean-up days to create healthier environments for their children.
