Tiny Dancer | Painted Live by Jack Coulter

Jack Coulter has a rare gift: he can see sounds. It is this out-of-the-ordinary ability that has made the Irish artist one of the most distinctive abstract painters of the modern day. Living with synaesthesia, he experiences sound as color, translating music into abstract technicolor compositions. This work was created during a live piano rendition of “Tiny Dancer” by @EltonJohn, performed in the gallery of his private Windsor residence, on his own piano. It marked the first time he had ever performed the song on solo piano without vocals, and the first time Coulter had ever painted during a live, one-on-one performance. As Elton played the opening notes, Coulter began painting in direct response to the music. Melody, rhythm, and emotion shaped each brushstroke. Created in a single take, the painting carries the raw energy of Elton’s live performance—held forever on canvas and never to be repeated. Elton—who has Coulter’s visual interpretation of “Candle in the Wind” hanging in his own home—has said that Coulter “magically takes the influence of music on visual art to a dazzlingly colourful and inventive new level.” It meant so much to see it find a home during the Elton John AIDS Foundation's 2026 Oscar Party auction, raising $275,000 to support the Foundation’s work around the world. -- Directed by Robert Ford Produced by Harder Than You Think
