Upholding the UN Charter and Strengthening the International System - UN Chief's remarks | UN

Remarks by António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, on the Upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and strengthening the UN-centered international system - Security Council, 10159th meeting. “On matters of peace and security, members of this Council have a particular responsibility to lead by example,” UN Secretary-General told the Security Council. Antonio Guterres also said, “A Security Council that does not reflect the geopolitical realities of today’s world cannot fully deliver on its responsibilities. For example, the absence of permanent representation for Africa is a historic injustice.” He added, “But no reform – institutional or structural – can substitute for political will. The Charter is clear. Member States shall refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations. They shall act in accordance with international law.”
