Climate Change and Biodiversity
🔥 Climate Change, Forest Fires, and Bhutan’s Biodiversity 🌿
Bhutan is a biodiversity hotspot in the Eastern Himalayas, home to:
🌱 Over 5,600 vascular plant species
🦌 200 species of mammals
🦜 700+ species of birds
But the devastating effects of climate change are threatening this rich natural heritage. With rising global temperatures causing drier conditions, forest fires have become more frequent and severe, burning approximately 7,000 hectares of forest land annually.
However, the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) offers hope through key measures, such as:
✅ Strengthening adaptive fire management plans
✅ Securing infrastructure at risk
✅ Enhancing fire risk mitigation strategies
✅ Equipping forest and firefighting teams to respond effectively
Biodiversity is essential not only for Bhutan but for global climate resilience. Healthy ecosystems act as carbon sinks, storing carbon and regulating weather patterns.
