Climate Change and Health

Climate change is reshaping the world as we know it, and Bhutan is no exception. Rising temperatures, extreme rainfall, and droughts are not only altering our environment but also affecting human health in unprecedented ways. In this video, we explore how climate change has led to the emergence of vector-borne diseases like dengue and chikungunya, which were previously unheard of in Bhutan just 20 years ago. With average temperatures rising and mosquitoes now sighted at altitudes as high as 4,000 meters above sea level, the health system is under increasing strain. However, hope lies in adaptation measures identified by Bhutan’s National Adaptation Plan. These include: ✅ Disease-specific safeguards in urban planning ✅ Strengthening water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions ✅ Enhancing intersectoral and international collaboration ✅ Improving disease monitoring and surveillance As this video highlights, addressing the health impacts of climate change requires a holistic approach. Only by working together can we build resilience and ensure the well-being of communities.
