Poverty should never define a child’s future.

Poverty should never define a child’s future.

“We don't have enough money. When I’m not cooking properly, I buy instant noodles and boil them with eggs. A bag of noodles shared among 3 or 4 people. I just have some broth and few noodles,” said Lek Thongsuk, grandmother of five grandchildren. For families like Lek’s, every baht matters. The Child Support Grant provides 600 baht per month for families with children under 6 years old. Yet more than 34% of eligible children miss out on the grant because the application process is too complicated and families need to take time off to apply. Lek Thongsuk’s family is one of them. UNICEF calls on the Government to ensure no vulnerable child is left out of the Child Support Grant, and increase the value of the Grant so it can truly protect children from poverty. Poverty should never define a child’s future.
