How does EUSEE data support civil society to fight back for fundamental freedoms?
Civil society and fundamental freedoms are under threat around the world. Oppressors feel emboldened by the direction of global events, and citizens are suffering growing restrictions to their fundamental freedoms. As part of the negative trend, the enabling environment that allows civil society organizations to operate is under threat.
The EU System for an Enabling Environment for Civil Society (EUSEE) is a consortium of international civil society organizations (Hivos, Transparency International, Forus, EPD, CIVICUS and DRI), and network members in 86 countries. The partnership implements an Early Warning and Monitoring Mechanism to document changes and shed light on critical trends in the enabling environment for civil society.
The challenges facing civil society are monumental, but the path forward is clear. Civil society is not a threat, it is a pillar of democracy, a driver of development, and a voice for the marginalized. Forewarned by our alerts and armed with our growing evidence base, civil society actors across 86 countries are better prepared to defend human rights and democratic values, push for systemic change, and seize opportunities for positive transformation.
Here’s how our network members are using our data to make an impact.
