Saameynta: Creating jobs and livelihoods for displacement-affected communities in Baidoa
Habiba is one of the several IDPs who are directly benefiting from the livelihoods and enterprise development support initiative implemented by UNDP under the Saameynta Programme. In 2025 alone, over 5,000 community members like Habiba benefited through improved household income and increased availability of locally processed food products. This was possible with the programme supporting 450 Somali youth, over 70% them IDPs, with skills trainings on cooperatives, business and enterprise development, improved access to finance, including start-up grants, and markets and productive assets.
Funded by the Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland through the Somalia Joint Fund (SJF), Saamaynta is a joint UN programme being implemented by UNDP, IOM and UN Habitat since 2021 in Somalia. The programme aims to address the complex challenges of internal displacement in Somalia through innovative and sustainable solutions, supporting the Federal Government of Somalia in their goal to achieve durable solutions for an estimated 3.5 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) within the country.
