Transforming recycled materials into tree planters | Mogadishu 2025 EP9 / Me & My Somalia

#MEANDMYSOMALIA YOUTH SERIES EP#9 Mohamed Omar is an environmental science student and founder of Geedsoor, a young initiative that encourages tree planting in homes and offices using recycled materials. His idea grew from a personal attachment to nature and frustration over how easily drought is spoken about in Somalia without acknowledging the causes behind it. “I often hear people say Somalia suffers from drought,” Mohamed explains, “but much of it comes from deforestation and the production of charcoal.” For him, planting trees is not only an environmental act but also a quiet response to a long-standing problem.
