Through her lens: Somali women in media | Mogadishu 2025 EP10 / Me & My Somalia
#MEANDMYSOMALIA YOUTH SERIES EP#10
Hidaya Mursal is a passionate videographer and storyteller breaking barriers in Somalia’s male‑dominated media industry. Based in Mogadishu, she works every day with a camera in hand, determined to capture the untold stories of her people. Yet behind the lens, she faces a different reality—one marked by safety concerns, societal stigma, and constant dismissive remarks. “When you see a girl filming in the city, what comes to your mind?” she asks. Too often, the response is, “This is a job for men.”
In a city with heavy restrictions, officials and community members frequently questioning her presence, even sometimes confronting her directly: “Are you here to confront me? Take that camera and go home, this isn’t your job.” For Hidaya, simply holding a camera becomes an act of defiance in an environment where women are rarely seen in such roles.
