Shirley Tarawali highlights key priorities for sustainable livestock development in Vietnam

In an interview with Vietnam Today features, ILRI assistant director general Shirley Tarawali highlights Vietnam’s efforts to build a more sustainable and resilient livestock sector. Tarawali outlines key priorities for the sector's transformation, including improving farmers’ access to knowledge, inputs and finance, and strengthening biosecurity and food safety systems. She also emphasizes the need for more efficient, climate-smart livestock production and the role of inclusive models (such as cooperatives and stronger value chains) in ensuring smallholder farmers benefit from modernization.. The interview was conducted during the Regional Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation in Food Systems in Asia and the Pacific, held in Hanoi on 24–26 March 2026. The event was co-hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of Vietnam (MAE), International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and CIRAD.
