ABASH: A Shelter of Hope — Holistic Cooling Solutions for Informal Settlements

ABASH (আবাস) is a winning project of the Heat Adaptive Architecture Design Competition, a global challenge calling on designers and architects to develop innovative, climate-responsive solutions for communities facing extreme heat. Set in Korail, one of Dhaka's largest informal settlements, ABASH introduces a climate-adaptive shophouse unit that tackles both rising temperatures and economic precarity. Built on a flexible 3×3 m modular grid inspired by Old Dhaka's vernacular architecture, the design combines dignified shelter with space to earn a living — using locally sourced materials like bamboo, brick, and recycled tin alongside passive cooling strategies including shaded verandas, ventilated floors, and porous brickwork. 📍 Korail, Dhaka, Bangladesh 🏆 Explore all competition winners: https://preparecenter.org/site/heat-adaptive-architecture-design-competition-meet-the-winners/ #HeatAdaptiveArchitecture #ClimateAdaptation #Dhaka #ABASH #PassiveCooling #InformalSettlements #DesignCompetition
