What I want you to know about Haiti

What I want you to know about Haiti

On April 15, MSF USA hosted an event at our offices in NYC focused on standing in solidarity with Haiti, where we’ve been providing medical humanitarian aid since 1991. Together with the Haitian feminist organization @NegesMawon, MSF staff, supporters, and community members came together to discuss the current realities and urgent humanitarian needs in Haiti — and to celebrate the resilience, culture, and strength of the Haitian community at home and abroad. The program featured a powerful conversation between Haitian activist @Pascale_Solages, co-founder of Nègès Mawon, and @TiranaHassan, CEO of MSF USA, moderated by Vania André, publisher and editor-in-chief of @HaitianTimes, about how the escalation of violence in Haiti is disrupting communities and pushing the country’s health care system to the brink. Throughout the evening, we asked attendees what they wish more people knew about Haiti. Their responses highlighted so much more than the headlines — a rich culture, love of music and soccer, deep pride, and a shared hope for a better future led by Haitians, themselves. Thanks to Cassandre Davilmar of @LakouCafe for the great bites, and to Haitian‑American singer songwriter @MikaelleAimee and her band for the music. We are grateful to everyone that joined us — and to @lalucien, @monvelino, Cassandre Davilmar of Lakou Cafe, @robyrays, and Josue Toussaint for sharing what they wished people knew about Haiti. What do you wish people knew about Haiti? Let us know in the comments.
