Kit Miyamoto, CEO of Miyamoto International, spoke with ABC10 News from LAX while en route to Venezuela following the country's strongest earthquake in more than a century. Venezuelan authorities report 235 deaths, more than 4,000 injuries, and thousands still missing. Kit's field estimate: roughly 5 million people are immediately without safe housing. Buildings constructed before the mid-1980s have no seismic protection systems, and major airports sustained extensive damage, forcing his team to fly into Colombia and enter by ground. On the ground, the Miyamoto International team will conduct rapid damage assessments to help governments and UN agencies shape their recovery plans.
