Aslam Perwaiz delivers keynote address at the 9th Asia Conference on Earthquake Engineering in Nepal
When disaster strikes, the time to prepare has already passed!
🎥Watch 𝐌𝐫. 𝐀𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐦 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐳, 𝐀𝐃𝐏𝐂 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫, as he delivers his keynote address at the 𝟗𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 in Nepal.
Speaking under the theme “𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞,” he draws attention to the growing intersection between earthquake risk and climate change.
With extreme weather events becoming more frequent and intense, the potential for cascading hazards is increasing -earthquakes occurring during heavy rainfall can intensify impacts through landslides, flooding, and weakened infrastructure.
❗️He highlights 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐢𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 - the ability of buildings, infrastructure, and communities to withstand, absorb, and rapidly recover from earthquake impacts.
This goes beyond structural safety; it includes risk-informed planning, resilient design and construction, early warning systems, and community preparedness.
Mr. Perwaiz emphasizes that 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐢𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠. For high-risk coastal and mountainous regions, this means accounting for compounding risks, protecting critical infrastructure, and ensuring that development is both climate-smart and earthquake-resilient.
