Honouring Dr. El Tantawy Attia: A Life of Service and Legacy

The Canadian Muslim community mourns the passing of a remarkable servant of faith and humanity, Dr. El-Tantawy Attia. A man whose life was defined not by titles or recognition, but by service. By quiet leadership. And by an unwavering commitment to doing good for the sake of Allah. Dr. Attia embodied the Qur’anic ideal of serving humanity with knowledge, integrity, and compassion. He led with humility, wisdom, and calm strength. He spoke softly, but his impact was profound and enduring. Educated at Alexandria University in Egypt and McMaster University in Canada, Dr. Attia dedicated more than 27 years as a nuclear engineer at Ontario Power Generation. Known for his precision, ethics, and sense of responsibility, he contributed to critical scientific and technical work that served the public good. Among Dr. Attia’s most far-reaching contributions was his role as a co-founder of Islamic Relief Canada. Together with a group of sincere and visionary leaders, he helped establish what would grow into one of the largest and most trusted charities in Canada. As a member of its Board of Directors, Dr. Attia oversaw the organization’s work with foresight and integrity, helping lay strong foundations of governance, accountability, and faith-driven service. His vision and dedication quietly shaped an institution that now serves millions across the world. This same spirit of service defined his leadership at Masjid Toronto, which he co-founded and guided for over two decades. Under his stewardship, it grew into a vibrant spiritual and civic home, welcoming worshippers, neighbours, and leaders from all backgrounds. Dr. El-Tantawy Attia’s legacy also lives on through his family, an exceptionally well-educated generation of community leaders, professionals, and advocates. In their own fields, they continue his work: building institutions, leading advocacy efforts, and serving society with purpose, excellence, and integrity. Dr. El-Tantawy Attia leaves behind institutions strengthened, leaders guided, and a community forever shaped by his sincerity. May Allah forgive him, illuminate his grave, and grant him the highest gardens of Jannah. Indeed, to Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return. Ameen.
