Refugees and local doing business and protecting the environment in Malawi
Due to high population, deforestation is a major issue in Dzaleka refugee camps and surrounding areas. Many people cut trees to make charcoal. Refugees and host communities are working together to produce eco-friendly briquettes made of recycled materials to protect the environment and create business opportunities.
The briquettes are cheaper than charcoal. A bag costs MK 7,000 while a bag of charcoal is MK 15,000. The important advantage is that participants are not destroying the environment. They only use leftover from groundnuts or sugar cane to make them
