Chigwirigwidi: the village that resisted Cyclone Freddy in Malawi

A few days after the cyclone, WFP visited Chigwirigwidi village in Traditional Authority Nazombe in the district of Phalombe, one of the most affected districts. The village sits at the bottom of a sloppy hill making them vulnerable to water run-off. This community has been participating in integrated resilience activities with the support of the United Kingdom under a UN Joint resilience-building programme (PROSPER) and has managed to withstand the shock, particularly thanks to deep trenches and stone bunds at the top of the hill which managed to control the run-off when the cyclone hit.
