GDI Conference Plenary 6: The Oligarchic Order: How Inequality Broke Multilateralism

Chair: David Hulme (GDI) Speaker: Winnie Byanyima (UNAIDS) Geopolitical tensions are leading many to question whether the rules-based order is giving way to the zero-sum power politics that characterised much of human history. Yet, even at the height of multilateralism, the rules of the global economy underpinned inequality and embedded colonial dynamics that have held back the development of many countries of the Global South. Today, we are living in an age of economic oligarchy, while debt service and tax dodging drain more from Africa than the continent receives in aid, and intellectual property rules keep medicines and other innovations out of reach for many. Drawing on her experience as Executive Director of UNAIDS, her work to establish an International Panel on Inequality, and a lifetime of campaigning for a more equitable global economy, UN Under-Secretary General Winnie Byanyima will argue that multilateralism must be reformed to tackle the great challenges of our era – and outline how, even amid an upheaval of the global order, progress remains possible.
