Corridor Voices: Civil Society at the heart of the Lobito Corridor

The Lobito Corridor is a significant infrastructure project currently underway in Angola, DR Congo, and Zambia. It has the potential to reshape trade, connectivity, and economic opportunities in these countries—however, infrastructure alone does not guarantee development. During a recent engagement in Zambia’s North-Western Province, where corridor investments are expected to affect local communities and economies, our team from People in Need Zambia met with our partners—local civil society organisations: Environment Africa Zambia, the Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP), and the Kawama Widows and Orphans Project. Together, we explored how civil society can help ensure that infrastructure development remains inclusive, accountable, and responsive to local priorities. ❗️As a flagship initiative under the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, the Lobito Corridor presents an opportunity not only to improve connectivity and trade, but also to strengthen community participation, economic inclusion, and sustainable development. This must include local communities. Through our Corridor Voices Initiative—and with civil society partners—, we are creating opportunities for dialogue and collaboration among communities, civil society organisations, governments, researchers, and the private sector, helping ensure that local perspectives inform the future of corridor development. The Lobito Corridor is moving forward and it must bring communities with it.
