Mark Malloch-Brown on reforming the Bretton Woods institutions

Confidence in the multilateral system is waning. Institutions like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund are under growing scrutiny in a world very different from the one they were created to serve 80 years ago. These Bretton Woods institutions today face overlapping challenges: geopolitical shocks, debt and climate crises, and widening development gaps. So what should they do to rebuild legitimacy and trust with their client countries? For Mark Malloch-Brown, an ODI Global Board member and co-author of the Bretton Woods at 80 report, power needs to shift. The US and European countries must be prepared to reduce their decision-making dominance and allow other countries to have more influence. Mark was speaking at our recent event on how to reform global economic governance, alongside other distinguished panellists Patrick Achi (former Prime Minister of Côte d’Ivoire), Sri Mulyani Indrawati (Indonesia’s former Finance minister) and Minouche Shafik (Chief Economic Advisor to the UK Prime Minister), and our moderator and Chief Executive Sara Pantuliano. #BrettonWoods #WorldBank #IMF #Governance
