From Tradition to Trademark: Uganda's Herbalists Are Using Intellectual Property for Business Growth

Traditional herbal medicine has long been part of communities across Uganda, with knowledge passed down through generations. Today, herbalists are increasingly turning to intellectual property (IP) tools to protect their work, promote their products, and grow their businesses. The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), with support from WIPO, is raising awareness of these tools, including trademarks, to help traditional healers better position their products in the marketplace. One such practitioner is Dr. Pascal Osire, CEO of MK Modern Organics and Natural Products. "I have registered already 12 trademarks and many others – I am going to do it, because I know when I do that I am taking my business to another level," he says. Alongside Dr. Osire, other herbal medicine practitioners in Uganda are embracing trademarks to build recognizable brands and help sustain their traditional knowledge for generations to come. #WIPO #TraditionalKnowledge #IntellectualProperty #Uganda #Trademarks
