First, instead of going to a community with a needs assessment, a checklist, we ask them, what are you already doing to survive a crisis? We assume that they have agency and power, rather than that they have nothing. Instead of designing projects in these capitals, we give them money to continue doing what they have been doing…..Instead of putting resources solely into these expensive and inflexible institutions such as the UN, Global North NGOs and Contractors, resources should move directly to the frontline organisations working with these communities. Not only do they know what is best to support their communities, they know how to do it best. Instead of looking at them as risky and not to be trusted, we need to think of them as creative, innovative, committed and efficient engines of social development.
