What needs to be changed in contemporary philanthropy work: Degan Ali's Perspectives

While speaking at the 2022 Global Philanthropy Forum, Degan Ali said, " “The biggest philanthropist are the poor. We ignore them, we think that philanthropy is attached to having a large endowment or being a major stockholder like Amazon and Facebook. But we forget that the poor, every day, they exercise philanthropy. And they probably exercise the riskiest, costliest and biggest philanthropy. When you are living on one dollar a day, to give 20% of that to your neighbour so that the child gets food…..., that’s very risky. We need to realise that those who have, should feel honoured to give those who do not. It is not a transaction. It is not about getting a tax break. Philanthropy is not a job.
