How Journalists Report on an Increasingly Secretive China
NEW YORK, May 8, 2026 — China attracts more global attention than ever, yet under Xi Jinping’s leadership, it has become increasingly difficult to understand. As politics grow more opaque, media restrictions tighten, official data becomes less accessible, and civil society is increasingly silenced, journalists face growing challenges in seeing beyond Communist Party propaganda and capturing realities on the ground.
In this live recording of The Economist’s China podcast, "Drum Tower," hosts Sarah Wu and Jeremy Page are joined by The New York Times’s Li Yuan to discuss the challenges of reporting on China and how journalists inside and outside the country are responding.
Co-hosted by the Asia Society Policy Institute’s Center for China Analysis and ChinaFile in collaboration with The Economist.
