Remaking the Academic Museum for the 21st Century
TOKYO, April 2, 2026 — What does it mean to build a museum for the 21st century? In this conversation, James Steward, director of the Princeton University Art Museum; and Kit Brooks, curator of Asian Art, explore the vision behind the newly opened Princeton University Art Museum—from its architecture as a “porous” public space to its role as a teaching institution and global cultural platform. Through bold curatorial strategies, cross-cultural juxtapositions, and an expansive Asian Art Pavilion, the museum redefines how collections can foster dialogue, challenge assumptions, and connect scholarship with society. The session is hosted by Jun Kigoshi, arts and culture committee member at Asia Society Japan. (1 hr., 3 min.)
