Takashi Murakami Honored as 2026 Art Game Changer

LOS ANGELES, May 3, 2026 — Takashi Murakami accepts Asia Society Southern California's Art Game Changer honor at the 2026 Asia Game Changer Awards SoCal presented by MindChamps. LACMA CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director Michael Govan introduces Murakami, tracing his Superflat philosophy, his Nihonga training, and his role in dismantling the divide between high and low culture, from Edo period painting to Louis Vuitton collaborations to monumental sculpture. In his acceptance, Murakami reflects on Los Angeles as formative to his international career, crediting early relationships with Blum & Poe and former MOCA curator Paul Schimmel with opening the American art world to him some 30 years ago.
