After the Shock: Rethinking Energy Security in Asia
June 4, 2026 — The ongoing U.S.–Israel–Iran conflict has exposed major vulnerabilities in global energy supply chains, with particularly significant consequences for Asia. Heavy dependence on Gulf energy imports, limited strategic buffers, and rapidly growing demand have left many economies across South Asia and Southeast Asia highly exposed to external disruptions in oil and gas markets, as well as critical industrial inputs including fertilizers, helium, and petrochemicals.
As governments respond to rising import costs, price volatility, and mounting pressure on currencies, foreign exchange reserves, and fiscal stability, the crisis has become a stark reminder of the structural vulnerabilities embedded within Asia’s energy security architecture. With energy demand continuing to grow alongside industrial expansion, urbanization, and digital infrastructure development, policymakers face urgent questions about resilience, diversification, and long-term security.
Ahead of major global gatherings including the UN General Assembly and COP31, this discussion examines the lessons from recent supply shocks, how governments and markets are responding, the geopolitical dynamics shaping Asia’s energy future, and practical pathways toward greater supply chain resilience, sustainability, and long-term energy security across the region.
The virtual discussion will feature Dr. Atul Arya, Senior Vice President and Chief Energy Strategist at S&P Global, Kate Logan, Director of China Climate Hub and Climate Diplomacy at ASPI, and Sam Reynolds, Research Lead at the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis. The discussion will be moderated by Farwa Aamer, Director of South Asia Initiatives at ASPI.
