When the Lights Stay On: Ray’s Story of Safer Birth in Kishapu.
When Ray David Kimeme went into labour with her first child, the health facility was in complete darkness.
With only a small torch to guide them, she gave birth under uncertain and frightening conditions, unsure if her baby would be safe.
Today, that same facility in Kishapu District, Shinyanga, is transformed.
Through a partnership between UNICEF and the Government of Tanzania, with support from the Government of the Republic of Korea, solar-powered energy systems are bringing reliable electricity to health facilities, ensuring safe deliveries, protecting life-saving vaccines, and supporting care day and night.
Now expecting her second child, Ray returns with confidence and hope.
“No other mother should have to give birth the way I did.”
When the lights stay on, so does the promise of care, for every mother, and for every child.
