Solomon Islands advances cause-of-death reporting to save lives

Solomon Islands began implementing modern civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems in 2016 with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies' Data for Health Initiative. Civil registration is the official recording of vital life events such as birth and death, while vital statistics are the data on and analysis of these events. Training on the medical certification of cause of death (MCCD) form and the expansion of a verbal autopsy program for community death have reshaped the country’s understanding of mortality. Verbal autopsy involves sending trained interviewers to determine the most likely cause of death with information from the deceased’s family members or caregivers. Verbal autopsies are used when a person passes away in their community, without being seen by a medical professional. The evolving integrated CRVS system is simplifying and streamlining data collection, analysis and distribution, enabling better provision of care and improving public health.
