A unified Costa Rican forestry sector charts a way forward for rural development

Come with us on a field visit to Santa Rosa de Pocosol, Costa Rica. As part of an ITTO project aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of Costa Rica’s forestry sector, representatives from the Costa Rican Institute of Technology, the National University, Costa Rica’s National Forest Financing Fund (FONAFIFO), the National Forestry and Wood Industry Chamber, and the National Forestry Office met Costa Rican producers to share information on how to generate income from timber resources by building a business which can access markets and sell products. For more than a decade, commercial reforestation rates and production in Costa Rica have stagnated, reducing employment opportunities for rural communities and contributing to a declining domestic timber supply. This ITTO project establishes a unified approach to the problem which connects professional foresters with timber producers to achieve rural development, grow export markets, provide access to financing, and establish high quality forest management. Timber producers featured in this video spoke about how they were able to establish timber plantations thanks to the support from this ITTO project. The producers were given the tools needed to better understand how plantations work, and when silvicultural interventions are needed to achieve good results.
