COP30: The critical role forests play in climate mitigation and adaptation

In an era of unprecedented and unpredictable climate challenges, urgent and collective action is desperately needed. With their capacity to absorb carbon, act as natural buffers against disaster risk, and enhance the well-being of millions, forests are critical to climate mitigation and adaptation. At COP30 in Belém, Brazil, ITTO co-organized a seminar at the Japan Pavilion with the Forestry and Forest Product Research Institute (FFPRI) to explore the role forests can play in the era of climate crisis, with a focus on solutions and community empowerment. During opening remarks at the event, ITTO Executive Director Sheam Satkuru underscored that investments in forest conservation and sustainable use are climate-smart investments that advance sustainable forest management as the foundation for development, biodiversity conservation, climate action, and resilient societies.
