ITTO in Viet Nam: Building domestic teak value chains and diversifying wood sources
Viet Nam is the second largest exporter of wooden furniture in the world with teak being a valuable resource for furniture production due to its durability, rot resistance, and aesthetics. However, a persistent gap in Viet Nam's teak sources has posed a challenge for economic development and the livelihoods of local communities.
As part of a joint ITTO-BMLEH project, ITTO is helping Viet Nam build its teak value chain through a series of training, technology transfer, and capacity building opportunities, as well as providing access to high quality seedlings for plantation in the areas of Dong Nai, Thanh Hoa, and Son La.
Participants in the project are introduced to best practices for selecting suitable planting teak, applying fertilizer, digging proper planting holes, and thinning and pruning.
With this project, ITTO is enabling Viet Nam to diversify its wood supply and use teakwood sourced domestically in the production of furniture and construction materials.
