Tech, tissue culture, and biochar: Supporting local communities in the Thailand-Myanmar border area

Ongoing instability in Myanmar has created challenges for local communities in the Thailand-Myanmar border area. With ITTO’s support, local communities in Mae Hong Son Province are responding by using innovative technology, tissue culture propagation techniques, and alternative fertilizers to address forest degradation, protect biodiversity, and ensure sustainable livelihoods. Watch the video to find out more about ITTO’s work in Thailand, with achievements including: • Providing access to SMART technologies which enables patrollers to more efficiently monitor community forests and respond to poaching and forest degradation. • Establishing a new laboratory at a school in the province, giving students the tools and knowledge to learn to propagate plants using tissue culture. • Introducing biochar and community kilns, allowing locals the ability to produce an alternative fertilizer which is cheaper and easier to access.
