Nature-based Solutions for Climate Resilience in Port Louis, Mauritius

In Port Louis, the capital city of Mauritius, adaptation to climate change is unavoidable. The island state in the Western Indian Ocean, is preparing to use nature’s strength to support climate action efforts in the country and boost their cities resilience. Given its geographical and geological context, the city is particularly vulnerable to flooding and sea level rise; however, climate change is exacerbating these urban challenges, which are increasingly exposing the local population to flash floods, urban heat, and landslides. Port Louis’ steep urbanization has favored grey infrastructure, which blocks natural water flows, hinders pluvial (or rainwater) absorption, and increases urban temperatures. UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre is working closely with national and local stakeholders to ensure that the city’s ongoing urbanization is resilient to the projected impacts of climate change. A key aspect of this effort is to integrate nature-based solutions to reduce urban flood risk in Port Louis and other areas.
