This is how fake used cooking oil is making its way into Europe's 'green' fuels
The 'green' fuel market supplying Europe with used cooking oil appears to be rife with fraud.
An investigation by SVT has uncovered that the world's largest producer of biofuel for aviation, Neste, is likely receiving virgin palm oil instead of recycled frying oil – contributing to deforestation and potentially more climate emissions than the fossil fuels they seek to replace.
The documentary shows that in Malaysia, used frying oil is collected from restaurants and households by subcontractors, which pays people more for their used cooking oil than what the virgin oil would cost. The investigative reporter is able to hand over cans of new palm oil without checks being made, highlighting just how flimsy the verification process is. And this is what European governments are relying on to ensure waste oil is actually what it says it is.
So many companies are claiming huge savings from using used cooking oil and other waste biofuels, but the truth is the system isn't working.
