Ebola outbreak: One month on

One month after an Ebola outbreak was declared in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) warns that the disease is spreading faster than the response. Despite recent efforts to scale up activities, major gaps in surveillance, diagnosis, contact tracing, and community engagement continue to undermine control of the outbreak. Ebola is spreading across Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, with Ituri accounting for the vast majority of cases. Treatment centres are overwhelmed, and many patients arrive in advanced stages of the disease, having never been identified or monitored as contacts. Decades of conflict, displacement, and weak health systems have created conditions in which Ebola can spread more easily, while fear and mistrust among communities further complicate the response. MSF stresses that controlling the outbreak must go hand in hand with maintaining access to routine healthcare, including maternal care, vaccinations, and treatment for other diseases.
