Afghanistan: A Growing Malnutrition Crisis Among Infants

Malnutrition remains a critical public health concern in Afghanistan — and children are being hit the hardest. Between January and April this year, MSF-supported inpatient therapeutic feeding centres in southern Afghanistan have recorded an alarming increase in admissions for severe acute malnutrition, with most patients younger than one year old. This worsening situation is driven by multiple factors: Major funding cuts to humanitarian assistance Regional tensions and border closures, driving food prices higher Disruptions in the supply of specialised therapeutic food With the peak malnutrition season starting earlier than expected, we are deeply concerned that growing needs will continue to outpace the humanitarian response. MSF is releasing a press statement calling for the urgent prioritisation of funding and nutrition support to prevent further deterioration of the nutritional situation in southern Afghanistan.
