The Bundibugyo virus challenge: why is this #Ebola disease outbreak different?
On 15 May 2026, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ministry of Health declared an Ebola disease outbreak in the country’s northeast, where Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams are already present. Since then, nearly 500 suspected cases and more than 130 deaths have been reported across multiple health zones. On the same day, Ugandan authorities confirmed the virus had crossed the border.
This outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a rarer Ebola strain for which no approved vaccine or treatment currently exists. As MSF teams work alongside health authorities, here’s what we know so far about the outbreak and the challenges shaping the response in the DRC and Uganda.
