Confront Slavery’s Legacy and Deliver Justice Now — Guterres Tells UNGA | #RememberSlavery

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for urgent global action to confront the enduring legacies of slavery, including systemic racism and inequality, during the UN General Assembly’s commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Addressing Member States ahead of the adoption of a landmark resolution declaring the transatlantic slave trade and the enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity, he urged countries to move beyond acknowledgment toward concrete change. “Now we must remove the persistent barriers that prevent so many people of African descent from exercising their rights and realising their potential,” he said. The Secretary-General emphasized the need for reparatory justice, equal access to opportunities, and stronger global commitments to human rights, dignity, and inclusion. As the world reflects on centuries of injustice, the message is clear: remembrance must lead to action. #RememberSlavery
