Treasures of the Deep: Marine Genetic Resources

Marine Genetic Resources (MGR) hold great potential for applications across pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food, and industrial and scientific processes. The deep ocean is a trove of these resources, so regulation of MGR is inextricably linked to the conservation and sustainable use of deep-sea biodiversity. The landmark BBNJ Agreement, adopted in June 2023, presents an opportunity to implement effective governance of MGR in areas beyond national jurisdiction, including the deep ocean. It is therefore essential that BBNJ decision-makers have access to the best available deep-sea scientific information to ensure that the freedom of scientific research is balanced with fair and equitable sharing of resource benefits. As an international and interdisciplinary network of experts, the DOSI MGR Working Group provides independent scientific knowledge to promote best practices for deep-sea MGR and support stakeholders in navigating relevant activities under the BBNJ Agreement. Find out more about the sustainable and equitable access and use of marine genetic resources and DOSI's MGR Working Group in this video. Interested in advancing deep-ocean science in policy?
