Can climate action beat geopolitical headwinds in 2026?

From Trump leaving the UNFCCC to escalating fossil fuel tensions in Venezuela and a fragile outcome at COP30 – climate multilateralism faces tough obstacles in 2026. 

But some countries are making efforts to move past fossil fuels and will advance talks on a global transition at the first such international summit in Colombia. This will require tripling renewable energy capacity, which in turn will be determined by the supply of critical minerals.
