🇬🇧 Here we present the trailer of the exciting film that tells the story of the commitment to coexistence between humans and wildlife in the Central Apennines. Directed by the award-winning French filmmaker Emmanuel Rondeau, promoted by Rewilding Europe and sponsored by Hogan Lovells, the film “The Central Apennines: A story of coexistence” features testimonies from a network of actors working in this wild corner of Italy to promote, implement, and benefit from best practices of coexistence between local communities and wildlife. The landscape of the Central Apennines is a complex mosaic of natural and human-made environments that have been intertwined for thousands of years. Despite this long coexistence, these mountains host a surprising variety of habitats and fauna, including endemics such as the Marsican brown bear and the Apennine chamois, which contribute to the high biodiversity of these territories. This diversity is also reflected in the human dimension, with numerous small villages dotted across the Apennine mountains, rich in rural traditions, local dialects, and distinctive architecture. However, today these communities face a decline in human capital. The abandonment of mountain subsistence agriculture and subsequent depopulation since the post-World War II period have led to passive rewilding of the Apennines, allowing nature to recover and revealing a beauty increasingly appreciated by locals and visitors alike. In this unique context, the work of the Rewilding Apennines team is vital. For over ten years, they have been committed to protecting fragile environments, reconnecting ecosystems, restoring areas heavily impacted by human activity, and bringing the benefits of returning nature to communities—whether they remain or relocate—so they can enjoy a higher quality of life. Rewilding Europe supports rewilding initiatives in the Central Apennines, and, in the view of a series of documentaries dedicated to the European rewilding landscapes, in 2024 commissioned a film from Emmanuel Rondeau, a French director renowned for his international awards, to visually highlight through powerful imagery and stories the intense work involved in fostering coexistence between humans and wildlife in this landscape. --- 🇮🇹 Un entusiasmante film, di cui proponiamo il trailer, racconta l’impegno per la coesistenza uomo-fauna in Appennino centrale. Diretto dal pluripremiato regista francese Emmanuel Rondeau, promosso da Rewilding Europe e sponsorizzato da Hogan Lovells, il film “L’Appennino centrale. Una storia di coesistenza” raccoglie le testimonianze di una rete di attori che in questo angolo selvaggio d’Italia stanno promuovendo, concretizzando e beneficiando delle buone pratiche di coesistenza tra le comunità locali e la fauna selvatica. Il paesaggio dell’Appennino centrale è un mosaico complesso di ambienti naturali e antropici che si intrecciano costantemente, sin da migliaia di anni. Nonostante la lunga coabitazione, queste montagne ospitano una varietà di ambienti e fauna sorprendenti, con numerosi endemismi, quali l’orso bruno marsicano e il camoscio appenninico, che conferiscono a questi territori un elevato grado di biodiversità. Tale diversità si evidenzia anche sotto il profilo umano, con una moltitudine di piccoli paesi che costellano le montagne appenniniche, ricchi di tradizioni rurali, linguaggi caratteristici, architetture peculiari… ma ad oggi con poco capitale umano. L’abbandono dell’economia rurale montana di sussistenza e il conseguente spopolamento a partire dal secondo dopoguerra hanno favorito il rewilding passivo delle montagne appenniniche, il ritorno della natura selvaggia e di una bellezza che oggi è sempre più apprezzata dalle persone, sia locali sia visitatori. In questo contesto speciale si inserisce il lavoro svolto dall’associazione Rewilding Apennines, che da oltre dieci anni si impegna per tutelare gli ambienti più fragili, riconnettere gli ecosistemi, ripristinarli laddove l’impatto umano è stato particolarmente distruttivo in passato, portare e accrescere i benefici della natura che ritorna alle comunità che restano (o che si trasferiscono) affinché possano godere di una qualità della vita elevata. Rewilding Europe supporta le iniziative rewilding in Appennino centrale e, nell’ambito di una serie di documentari dedicata alle aree rewilding in Europa, nel 2024 ha commissionato un film al regista francese Emmanuel Rondeau, vincitore di numerosi premi internazionali, al fine di mettere in luce con un linguaggio visivo potente, immagini vibranti e racconti delle persone che vivono in questo paesaggio l’intenso lavoro sulla coesistenza tra l’uomo e la fauna.
